This month we're looking at how practices are moving or have moved to become carbon neutral. These are their stories about the steps they have taken and the tips they have for other architectural practices who wish to join them. This story is from Smart Design Studio in Sydney:
"Smart Design Studio has a Sustainability Taskforce and they're actively trying to make all of our projects and systems as sustainable as possible. Our new studio was a great project for applying some of this knowledge and also pioneering some new ideas and technologies. The first move in sustainability was to retain as much of the existing footprint as we could, and here we retained 80% of the building’s area and reused those structures and adapted them for their reuse. And this obviously has great benefit in reducing embodied carbon. We also provide a very safe and healthy work environment and love having as many cyclists as we do as well as that people coming to work on public transport. And so I think we have very few people driving to work on a regular basis."
