Falls are a major threat to an older person's quality of life, often leading to injury, impacting on the ability of the person to care for themselves and leading to a decrease in their participation in physical and social activities. Furthermore, the fear of falling can result in a person limiting their activity levels, perhaps not going out walking as much or becoming more sedentary which impacts on their physical and mental wellbeing. What we want to do is find ways of reducing the risk of a person falling in the first instance. Kell discusses some areas to look at.
