Niger celebrated the third anniversary of its independence in a colourful ceremony at Niamey, the nation's capital, Niger, a former French colony voted to break with France in the 1959 referendum ordered by French president Charles de Gaulle soon after taking office. With a population of about two and a half million, Niger has an area of 494,400 square miles. President Hamani, reviewed a parade of Niger troops in the main square of Niamey. Some 4,000 cavalry and 1,000 camel mounted troops took part in the parade which also featured military vehicles. After there was a colourful display of traditional dancing.
