Discover our adventure at the summit of the Cerro Chato volcano located in La Fortuna – Costa Rica.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t hike the Arenal volcano due to his recent activity (the last eruption was in 2008). The biggest eruption of this volcano happened in 1968, causing the death of 80 people and devastating the West -side of the valley. That’s the reason why the locals built the artificial lake to prevent from a future eruption.

As for the Cerro Chato volcano, it is inactive for 300 years. Its last eruption happened 3500 years ago and destroyed its pointed summit, that why the locals called it “Chato”, meaning “flat”. This volcano has a trapezoid shape since then.

During our journey, our guide tour, Antonio, showed us different aspects of the surrounded vegetation. We had the pleasure to see different species of birds but also the famous frog with the red eyes. We arrived on the top of the volcano, located at around 1100 meters of altitude, after 2 hours of exhausting hiking. But, our efforts have been rewarded as we had the chance to swim and dive into amazing waterfall. At the end of the day, we enjoyed a bath into naturel sources heated by the volcano (40 degrees). What else?

This experience is part of the best memories from our trip to Central America. We are thankful for all the great moments lived and those amazing people we met on site, coming from all over the world.

Découvrez notre dernière aventure au sommet du volcan Chato, à la Fortuna - Costa Rica.

Nous n’avons pas pu gravir le volcan Arenal qui est le plus connu et le plus imposant de la région dû à sa récente activité (la dernière éruption date de 2008). La plus grande éruption du volcan Arenal date de 1968, et a fait près de 80 morts, ravageant tout le côté Ouest de la vallée. C’est pourquoi les villageois ont construit par la suite le lac artificiel Arenal en prévention d’une future éruption.

Le volcan chato quant à lui est inactif depuis 300 ans. Chato signifie « plat », on l’a surnommé ainsi après que son sommet pointu ait été détruit lors de sa dernière éruption il y a environ 3500 ans; ce volcan n’est dont pas en pointe comme le volcan Arenal mais en forme de trapèze.

Tout au long de la journée, notre guide Augusto nous a fait découvrir différents aspects de la végétation environnante; nous avons eu le plaisir d’observer plusieurs espèces d’oiseaux et également la fameuse grenouille aux yeux rouges du Costa Rica. Nous avons gravit le sommet du volcan situé à environ 1100 mètres, après 2 heures de hiking assez éprouvantes, mais la vue en valait la peine. Nous avons ensuite vécu un des plus beaux moments de notre périple en plongeant dans une cascade. La journée s’est terminée par un bain dans des sources naturelles chauffées par le volcan à 40 degrés. Que demander de plus après une journée aussi intense?

Cette aventure restera pour nous un des plus beaux moments de notre voyage depuis notre départ, les sensations fortes, les rencontres inoubliables avec des personnes venant du bout du monde, on en veut encore!
