Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister revealed a plan that would slowly reopen the province during the coronavirus pandemic. On Wednesday, Pallister said the province is implementing a phase-based approach to reopening the economy, which will begin May 4.
The premier announced that due to the efforts of Manitobans to help flatten the COVID-19 curve, the province will begin to "gradually start to get back to business." The first phase will allow a number of non-essential businesses to reopen. Outdoor recreational sites, like playgrounds, golf courses and campgrounds, will be subject to eased restrictions, while non-urgent health services, elective surgeries, dentists, orthodontics and physiotherapists will be allowed to take place.
Pallister also stressed that amid the first step in gradually reopening the economy of the province, there are certain restrictions that remain, including travel restrictions "for the time being.”
Phase 2 will not start until June 1 at the earliest. Public gathering sizes may be increased and more non-essential businesses will be considered for reopening including: additional personal services, such as nail salons, restaurants (dine-in services), non-contact children’s sports and film production.
