When a child turns in one direction, it activates the vestibular system on the same side. So if a child spins to the right (clockwise), it turns on the vestibular system in the right ear, and vice versa. This is what we are doing in these tests. It is called post-rotational nystagmus and it is the best way to assess balance of the vestibular system.
Nystagmus is the term used to describe quick involuntary movements of the eyes that occur when the body spins or the head moves quickly. This is what gives us the sensation of vertigo or that the earth is spinning, even if we are still.
