He has been in and out of prison eight times. Until his release in February this year, Ethiopian journalist Eskinder Nega had served almost seven years of an 18- year prison sentence. He was charged with violating the country's anti-terrorism laws for an article he published which questioned the detention of journalists in the country. Media rights group Reporters Without Borders ranked Ethiopia 150th out of 180 countries in the 2017 press freedom index.
