NEWS DESK | Israeli elections candidate Benny Gantz, in the heat of the 2019 race, traveled to the Israel-Gaza border to address reporters on the security situation with Hamas and the strip and other issues, following rocket fire of Tel Aviv the previous night.
Story:
Israel's Defense Forces confirmed that it had carried out a series of targeted attacks on Hamas and Islamic Jihad inside the Gaza Strip late Thursday in retaliation for two rockets that were fired from Gaza toward the center of Israel, triggering rocket sirens in Tel Aviv for the first time since the last war with Gaza in 2014.
Nine rockets were fired by Palestinians into Israeli territory overnight and into Friday morning, with the IDF reporting that six rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.
In response to the launches, the IDF said in a statement that it struck some 100 targets throughout the coastal enclave.Israel attributed responsibility for the overnight rockets to Hamas, despite official denial from the Gaza-based militant group.
The Hamas-run Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip said four Palestinians were injured by the Israeli strikes overnight, including a married couple who were injured after their house was struck in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
In Gaza, both rulers Hamas and Islamic Jihad, an allied group, issued statements denying any responsibility for the attack, which came just over three weeks ahead of Israel's April 9 election.
