Blue and Yellow through Black and Gray - War-time Ukrainian poetry in an ambient music frame is an album presented by AEMC (aemc.bandcamp.com).
To create this album, 12 Ukrainian poets (mostly young) joined forces with 15 musical projects from the USA, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and, of course, from Ukraine. Poems that were born in the first year of the war do not always talk about war, but the war is one way or another heard in every author’s voice. Line by line, these voices compose a song about the fullness of life on behalf of those whose lives are hunted. And the musical environment, abstract and melodic, noisy and Zen-like sparse, envelops and nourishes anxious voices, deciphers the indescribable with its language, exposes secret hints and alleviates the most painful things.
The circle of poets is mainly represented by the literary association "Сучасна Українська Поезія" (“Modern Ukrainian Poetry”), and all the musicians belong to the international Ambient and Experimental Music Community, best known for the series of Communal Music compilations. The three instrumental tracks that frame the narrative are based on samples taken from the remaining twelve tracks. It is the idea of building diverse material from the same samples that lies at the heart of the Communal Music concept - but unlike the spontaneously emerging CM, in this album the work of the musicians was subordinated to a clear idea and strictly moderated. During the work, the musicians actively helped each other, while communication with the poets was excluded in order to avoid adjusting to their musical preferences.
All songs on the album have their own video embodiments containing translations of the poems into English. The line-by-line translations were not made by professional poetry translators, but made with maximum attention to the text. Poetry translation can also be found in the info section of the corresponding track.
All the poems were written between February, 2022, and February, 2023.
All the music was composed and recorded between February and July, 2023.
All profits from album sales will be donated to the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Northern Region, located in Kharkiv, Ukraine.
