The town is located at the confluence of the Rur (Dutch: Roer) and the Meuse on the right bank of the Meuse. The city centre is located directly on the Rur. On 13 April 1992, four kilometres southwest of the city, was the epicentre of the Roermond earthquake, an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale. It was the strongest earthquake in Central Europe since 1756. Districts[edit | edit source] Roermond is divided into a total of 36 districts. At the beginning of 2007, the neighbouring municipality of Swalmen to the north with 8790 inhabitants was incorporated. The area of the municipality increased considerably from 46.87 to 71.19 km² as a result of the incorporation.
