Leaders from around the world are set to discuss plastic production, use and disposal in a global treaty in Canada.
New data from the US shows five per cent of global greenhouse emissions come from plastic production, which could grow to 20 per cent by 2050 if trends continue.
Research found 56 companies were responsible for more than half of the labelled plastic waste.
The main contributors among them were The Coca-Cola Company, Pepsico and Nestle.
CSIRO Researcher Dr Britta Denise Hardesty said it is ultimately about “changing our relationship with plastic”.
