Lagertha, also known as Ladgerda, was a fierce and fearless Viking woman who lived in the 9th century AD. She was the first wife of Ragnar Lothbrok, a legendary Viking king and hero who conquered many lands and faced many enemies. Lagertha fought by his side in many battles, including against King Fro of Sweden, who had killed Ragnar’s grandfather, and King Horik of Denmark, who had usurped Ragnar’s throne. Lagertha’s story is told by Saxo Grammaticus, a 13th century AD Danish historian, in his work Gesta Danorum, which is written in Latin. Lagertha may have been based on the Norse goddess Thorgerd, who was worshipped in Halogaland, Norway, or on the ancient idea of the Amazon, a tribe of warrior women from Greek mythology. Lagertha is a symbol of female strength and courage, and a fascinating figure in Viking history.
