Rescue efforts were underway on Wednesday to try and save 100+ pilot whales that beached upon a shore in Tasmania, Australia. The incident comes just days after 14 sperm whales also beached upon another Australian island.
Marine wildlife expert Vanessa Pirotta told the AP that the recent frequency of these events could indicate whale populations in the area could be starving, and thus willing to take riskier routes closer to shore in search of food.
‘The fact that we’ve seen similar species, the same time, in the same location, reoccurring in terms of stranding at that same spot might provide some sort of indication that there might be something environmental here,’ Pirotta said.
