North Face founder Douglas Tompkins, 72, died from severe hypothermia on Tuesday after his kayak capsized in General Carrerra Lake in the Patagonia region of southern Chile, officials said. The Aysten health service said Tomkins (pictured left in 1968 and right more recently) was boating with four or five other foreigners when all of the kayaks capsized at about noon, local time. Tompkins, who grew up in Millbrook, New York, founded The North Face in 1964 to make and sell outdoor equipment. Survivors of the accident are pictured inset.
