This is a classic problem in Northhamptonshire, or the Midlands of the UK. We've got a lot of blue clay in this area so what you got to do is you basically got to avoid what happened here. We've got blue clay hole so we've dug a hole and basically it's filled up with rain water over a period of, we've just had a break.
This is the display pond at our yard, you're more than welcome to see this finished. It won't look like this when you come and have a look.
Basically in the planning process you've got to understand the soil type what you're digging in. If it's blue clay what's going to happen is the blue clay is going to hold the water so there's no point building a pond on top of this.
I will come to how you get over this in second but you basically got to think about the soil type. If it holds water, you got to think about stopping that water from lifting the liner and all of the pond up because there's nothing to hold it and it basically overflows and then the rainwater evaporates or disperses over in the summer months.
Then what happens is, it looks like the ponds got a leak but it's not. Basically the pond's being lifted up and then dropping back down and then of course all the water cannot go back in so it's a big problem.
In the planning process understand the soil type that you're digging in.
