The surprising thing about "Flitter Flutter Butterfly" is how endlessly useful it is. At first glance, it's a nice little fingerplay, hardly worth a second thought, and you could certainly stop there, but it also works well as a parachute activity, as a movement activity (with scarves or without), as an activity for exploring small hand percussion, and even as a nice way to help orient students to xylophones.
You can use the repeated stanza as an A section for a rondo, and write an extra stanza or two (or have your students do it!) to expand the piece. I'll even put some suggestions in the lyrics below to get you started.
Let me know if you come up with some other brilliant ideas. I'm sure there are many more than the few I mentioned.
Lyrics:
Flitter flutter, butterfly
Flying in the bright, blue sky
Flutter high, flutter low.
Flutter fast, flutter slow.
Flitter flutter, butterfly
Flying in the bright, blue sky.
Some suggestions:
Flutter happy, flutter mad.
Flutter silly, flutter sad.
Flutter stomping, flutter wiggling.
Flutter spinning, flutter giggling.
Flutter your fingers, flutter your toes
Flutter your knees, flutter your nose
(You get the idea!)
