Listen to Muhammd Tanvir share his story of being targeted by the FBI. His case, Tanzin v. Tanvir, is before the Supreme Court.
For years, FBI agents harassed Muhammad Tanvir. They showed up at the 99 cent store where he worked, questioned him at the airport, and even visited his sister, all to try to pressure him to become an informant. Each time he was approached, he refused to engage in the suspicionless spying of other Muslims, because it went against his values and religious beliefs. The FBI then placed him on the No-Fly List in retaliation.
“I was very scared. I couldn’t travel...It feels like you don’t have a soul in your body.”
Muhammad and other American Muslims filed a federal lawsuit challenging the FBI's abuse of of the No-Fly List as a tool to coerce Muslims into spying on others. After they were removed from the List, they still pursued the case to try to hold the FBI agents accountable for violating their religious rights.
