I am a Canadian citizen. Do I need a visa to travel to the United States?
As a general rule, Canadian citizens do not need visas to travel to the U.S. for tourism, or business purposes, or periods of brief study.
To enter the United States, Canadian citizens must present a valid passport when traveling by air or a travel document in line with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) when traveling by land.
Specific citizen categories need to apply for a U.S. visa, including:
● Treaty traders and investors
● Fiance(e)s or children of foreign citizens
● U.S. citizen spouse or children, traveling to stay in the United States in the process of obtaining an immigration visa
● Spouses and children of lawful permanent residents, traveling to stay in the U.S. in the process of obtaining an immigration visa
● Non-immigrant work visitors, such as:
○ Canadian government officials going to the U.S. for temporary or permanent work
○ International organizations officials and employees going to the U.S. for temporary or permanent work
○ NATO officials and employees assigned to the U.S.
Canadian citizens who have been denied entry to the United States because of a criminal history or visit overstay must obtain an entry waiver.
