I do mostly small paintings for many reasons, such as to challenge myself in cramming as much detail into small surface areas and because they are less time consuming than a large scale piece! And since I do, I buy small canvases in bulk! With that said, their surface area usually leaves a lot to be desired! Therefore I always give them an extra of gesso! BUT I made a mistake with my most recent painting which I just call "Red Poppies."

Because I did an acrylic under painting, I thought it would be fine to skip preparing the surface (usually I use a tinted coat). But in the end it was a decision I regret! Plus I felt a smoother surface would of done the poppies more justice! Lastly you will notice in the end that the under painting of the second poppies painting I am working on have the flowers depicted orange.. for a reason! Check out my youtube short for why I did that as well! The short answer is I wanted them to be bright red in the end!
