This is an April evening bike commute in London. Roughly it starts in Kings Cross on the west side of Pancras Station (the outside of which is used in Harry Potter films) and progresses mostly south past Russel Square down to Waterloo bridge. I wish you could see the view left and right instead of head on -- you'd see St Paul's cathedral and the City on the left, the London Eye and the Elizabeth Tower with Big Ben and Charing Cross Station on the right, among other wonderful sights. From Waterloo Bridge I wiggle down to the C5, fka Q5 before the Quietway branding was retired. That gets me to Clapham Common.
In answer to some questions I am commonly asked:
Every day I go to the office I commute by bicycle rain-or-shine, dark or light. When I don't bike I take the train and tube. I wear a pollution mask while commuting because London's air quality is improving but isn't good enough, I have asthma, and my commutes are repeated and as aerobic as I can make them. I have been bike commuting for many years in multiple cities.
I don't own a car and I only own one bike -- a regular old non-electric gravel bike. I do all my own maintenance. I'm not currently sharing telemetry or maps. On the straighter and safer sections of flat roads I'm typically travelling around 32kmh or 20mph, the typical speed limit in London.
I endeavor to follow all traffic rules but sometimes make mistakes. I try to be polite and respectful to other road users. London is a complicated place and the rules are not always clear. I'm happy to hear constructive feedback about my performance.
In this video my camera is a GoPro MAX 360 running in "wide" view at 1080p. With that setting you cannot see my head turning, but you can kinda see my fingers braking and changing gears. I have "horizon leveling" turned on and you won't typically see the lean angle of my bike. The world looks a bit different to me in real life than the camera portrays, notably I feel there is more space to my left and right than appears on the screen.
