There can be a strong impulse for counselling students to want to come away feeling that they've really helped their client. They can feel that as long as the client is talking then they know that the session is going well. Yet it can often be the case that this enthusiasm can lead to a common question that is best avoided, especially at the end of a session.
"Is there anything else you'd like to add?" is something I commonly hear with counselling student on a the CPCAB level 2 course. As well intentioned as it may be, what it can do is leave the client feeling abandoned and vulnerable. This is because with only a few minutes to go the client can share brand new information that may be highly sensitive and deeply traumatic and have no time to process it or feel safe by sharing it.
In many ways, it is unethical as it leaves the client to walk away feeling unheld and exposed. In this video I explain more about why this is the case and what to do instead.
