Two weeks ago the heavens opened over the far west of New South Wales raising hopes this long and punishing drought could soon be over.
It offered respite for some desperate graziers near Broken Hill.
But while they've shed tears of joy, nearby properties cruelly received little or no rain, causing anguish and heartbreak.
Angelique Donnellan went south and north of Broken Hill to visit landholders with vastly different fortunes.
