Witness our journey through Eastern Uttar Pradesh, as we not only explore the folk music of the region, but also try to understand why their popularity is dwindling today. This region is a microcosm of the diversity of our country, which was reflected in the music that ranged from devotional and religious, to mythologized histories, social issues and popular entertainment. The language also varied a lot, with musicians performing in Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Urdu and rustic Hindi.
Lack of widespread reach and recognition seems to be the foremost reason for the shrinking income of folk musicians. In today’s digital age, their presence on the internet seems indispensable to improve their situation. Through this documentary, we have tried to shine the light on a few such musicians, in the hopes of improving their visibility, and helping the larger public develop an appreciation for the rich culture and heritage that they preserve.
