Bottrop is a city in west-central Germany, on the Rhine–Herne Canal, in North Rhine-Westphalia. Located in the Ruhr industrial area, Bottrop adjoins Essen, Oberhausen, Gladbeck, and Dorsten. The city had been a coal-mining and rail center and contains factories producing coal-tar derivatives, chemicals, textiles, and machinery. Bottrop grew as a mining center beginning in the 1860s, was chartered as a city in 1921, and bombed during the Oil Campaign of World War II. In 1975, it unified with the neighbouring communities of Gladbeck and Kirchhellen, but Gladbeck left it in 1976, leading to Kirchhellen becoming a district of Bottrop as Bottrop-Kirchhellen. It is also twinned with Blackpool, England.

•Berliner Platz is one of the main squares in Bottrop, Germany. It is located in the city center and is considered an important meeting point and interest for residents and visitors. The square is surrounded by numerous businesses, restaurants, cafes and shops. It is also where local events and celebrations take place.

•The Bottrop town hall has been the seat of the city's council and administration since 1912. With the building of the town hall, Bottrop sent a clear signal towards becoming a city.

•The Tetrahedron in Bottrop is a walkable steel structure in the form of a tetrahedron with a side length of 60m, resting on four 9m tall concrete pillars. It is located in Bottrop, Germany, on top of the mine dump Halde Beckstraße and serves as the town's landmark. It was opened on German Unity Day 3 October 1995.

•The BernePark is a special kind of industrial monument. Waste water was treated in the BernePark for almost forty years. Then the facility with the two circular pools and the machine house was shut down and was almost forgotten. Until the Emschergenossenschaft decided to revitalize it as a place of industrial culture.
