I use mason jars for just about everything from jam, to canned veggies, to pickling, and storage of dry grains, legumes and other knick knacks. The metal lids and rings aren't always neccessary for all these applications so I was glad to find there was a one-piece solution that is also freezer friendly. As many others have found, these lids are not water tight so liquids will leak out if the jar is inverted. But fear not! There are silicone rings made specifically to seal this gap and give you a tight seal. While still not appropriate for heat canning, it will allow you to transport your liquids with these caps and provides a little protection from spoilage by keeping things airtight. I use them plain though for things like dried beans from my garden, plastic beads, nails, open pickle jars and stuff that I know I'm going to finish before it spoils. They're just that much more convenient than the metal lids and rings and I can definitely recommend them for folks who want to skip the two-piece lid for such purposes.
