This is the aftermath of the Marawi siege, a conflict that began in May 2017 when Islamic militants took over parts of Marawi city. Almost the entire population of Marawi city was forced to flee, and over a thousand civilians from Marawi died, including soldiers of the Armed forces of the Philippines. After five months of intense fighting in Marawi City, The Armed Forces of the Philippines successfully won the Marawi Siege and was celebrated by the Filipino people. However, all that remained was Marawi city in ruins.
