Joi Mondisa attributes her success to a small community she discovered during undergrad, providing family and mentorship. Now, Mondisa is studying how University of Michigan M-STEM and other mentorship programs help college students from diverse backgrounds.

Faced with an unwelcoming experience, Mondisa knows how social factors can impact a person’s undergraduate career. She found a small community of people who shared similar experience, and together, they preserved.
Here at the University of Michigan, where she is now an Assistant Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering, she is studying the “Social Community Model,” a framework that can be used to examine participants’ program experiences and outcomes, and empirically assess engineering mentoring programs.
