1st January 2021 marked the official start of trading under the African Continental Free Trade area, AfCFTA, which establishes a single continental market. it allows the export and import of goods and services amongst the various AfCFTA state parties duty free, quota free under the protocols.


Among the key benefits to be derived from trading under AfCFTA are an expanded market for small and medium enterprises in Africa on preferential trade terms, leading to increased investment in value addition; the development of regional value chains; and enhanced job opportunities for the youth.


In practical terms, from 1st January, a product made in Ghana can be exported to an AfCFTA state party or country if it falls within that countries schedule of 90% liberalised products and are verified by GRA customs as meeting the AfCFTA rules of origin protocol.
