Famous American author James A. Michener once said, “Scientists dream about doing great things. Engineers do them.”
Such is the status and level of respect for Engineers in the society.
In India too, Engineering was once regarded a very noble and respectful profession. Not everyone was born to be an Engineer.
But as of now, the scenario has changed quite a bit.
According to the HRD ministry, India has 6,214 engineering and technology institutions which are enrolling 2.9 million students.
Out of those, around 1.5 million engineers are released into the job market every year.
But as per a survey conducted by Aspiring Minds, “Only 7 percent of Engineering graduates are employable.”
The question comes in mind, “What is wrong with India’s Engineers?”
Lack of quality education and quality teachers (absence of up to date syllabus) despite increasing number of universities, colleges and programmes every year can be credited as one of the major reasons.
Some other reasons can be, Companies are not interested in spending much on training and prefer candidates with some skill sets who can be made billable soon.
Also, problems with English language along with issues in Computer Programming make many of the graduates ineligible for the employment.
Other than these, the trend of “Ladka hua to Engineer, Ladki hui to Doctor” prevailing in the Indian society can be surely credited as a reason.
Not every child might be interested in becoming an Engineer for the sake of fulfilling his parent’s expectations. It is better not to force them. Let them do what they want to do. Let them make their own career choices.
Also, the Government needs to sit up with Engineering Institutions and take notice of the issues that are threatening the eligibility and capability of Engineers and Engineering profession.
So next time, if someone asks you to join Engineering for the sake of a lucrative job, think twice over what you actually want for yourself.
If you really want to become an Engineer, work hard for it, work hard on yourself and make yourself more than just employable, make yourself an “Engineer”.
Let us make this country great again! Let us make the Engineers Great again!
