The “Institute Pasteur” was founded in Paris on June 4, 1887 to honor and celebrate the scientific and humanitarian work of legendary French scientist, Louis Pasteur. Original funding for the building and laboratories sprang forth from the hearts, minds and pockets of shoeshine boys and kings, and all others from every nationality who were inspired by the brilliant and dedicated scientist with great humility who had saved so many lives around the world by inventing a rabies vaccine to relegate to history one of the most terrorizing infectious diseases the world had ever known. They were confident that Pasteur and his team of “lieutenants” at the Institut Pasteur would usher in more vaccinations and groundbreaking discoveries would save and improve millions of lives by preventing disease in future generations too. Grateful supporters also believed their financial support would make it possible for vulnerable people everywhere in the world to benefit from Pasteur’s vision of a disease-less society characterized by antiseptic precautions and antimicrobial and anti-viral therapies. And they hoped their charitable contributions would help to save and improve the lives of many others in every corner of the globe, including pregnant mothers, newborn babies, and patients undergoing surgical operations, who were among those who most often could directly trace their very life… to Pasteur’s championing of “Germ Theory”… and life-saving sterilization procedures.
