The first phase of Canada's nationwide single-use plastic ban is now in effect, meaning disposable plastic such as straws, cutlery and grocery bags will soon become things of the past.

Some provinces and cities already had similar bans established, in an attempt to stop the littering of landscapes and clogging of waterways.

But as Touria Izri explains, the transition to reusable replacements may not be as fruitful for the environment as we think.
