I know I've probably said it a million times, but here's one more for good measure...STOP KILLING YOUR TREES WITH STRING TRIMMERS!
The base of your tree must be protected from mechanical damage, especially young trees who will have a much more difficult time recovering. But really ALL trees need to be protected, because any mechanical damage will impact the life of your tree.
In this case, this young hackberry isn't going to make it. It may last out another season, but ultimately it will fail without it's circulatory system.
It really hurts my heart to see trees planted, just to be absolutely decimated by string trimmers or lawn mowers as soon as the lawn needs to be cut. Put in a tree well, good people. Protect your young trees, protect ALL of your trees...keep the grass away from the base, and don't flog them to death!
