The Ellenville Central School District saw a notable improvement in the performance of students in the third to eighth grades, according to recently administered state assessments.
Proficiency rates in third grade English language arts showed the largest increase at 18 percent followed by sixth grade math with a 15 percent gain. School Board President Phil Mattracion shared his thoughts on the reasons behind this improvement.
"We have a new math program, we have a focus on high dosage tutoring and AIS Services, as well as a new ELA program," he said. "What we want to concentrate on is Ellenville's improvement. Ellenville is starting and rise and we're starting to meet the challenges of education."
He says that improvements to security and athletics will also improve proficiency scoring in the future.
"We want to be a school of excellence but you have to have the academics along with the athletics and a certain benchmark for those academics," he said. "We want to be able to be one of those schools and offer our kids the same opportunities that every other kid has. There's no reason why we can't."
