What question should I ask a law firm before hiring them for my personal injury? Case number one, does your firm handle personal injury cases? Primarily? Many firms dabble in personal injury. They think it's a quick way to get rich, and unfortunately that kind of leaves their clients out to dry. So make sure whoever you go with has experience working on your type of case. Number two, how many cases per lawyer does your law firm have? Law firms vary greatly on this perspective. Some law firms have a little and some have 100, 200, 300. I've even seen 400 cases per attorney, and they use case managers to manage the files. We believe in putting very few cases per attorney, so we're able to give individualized attention. We think the only way to tell your story is to get to know you. Find out what you went through, what has your family gone through?
What have your kids gone through? How has this affected your life? And you can't do that with a cookie cutter mill top approach. You have to spend the time to get to know your clients, and I feel very passionately about that issue. Number three, does your law firm offer free consultations? That's really important. Some attorneys charged by the hour and are gonna charge you, you know, several hundred dollars just to find out if you have a case, make sure you ask ahead of time that question. Our law firm always offers free consultations, but not all do. So make sure you ask that ahead of time. Number four, is your firm willing to litigate or are you gonna refer my case out if it gets into litigation? Some law firms are only what are called pre-litigation firms, which means they don't like to file lawsuits, and then when it gets into litigation, they're gonna give it to another law firm.
Now our approach is we want to have the case from the beginning all the way to trial. If that happens, 99.9% of cases don't end up in trial, and most cases don't end up in litigation. But you need to make sure you're with the firm that has the resources and is able to bring a case in litigation if that's the case. Number five, does your firm have the resources to spend on case expenses? Case expenses are used to pay for things like experts, depositions, videographers, focus groups, uh, investigations, expert witnesses, and a variety of other things. Not all law firms have the resources to afford those, and they try to use a shoestring budget. It's really important that you go with a law firm that's able to put in as much money as necessary into your case. Most personal injury law firms are gonna front the expenses and then if the case doesn't work out, they eat the cost.
Make sure you ask those questions before you hire a firm. Number six, is your law firm gonna keep the case or is it gonna refer it out to another law firm? Some attorneys market themselves as personal injury law firms, and then they just refer it to another law firm and take a percentage of the fee. You want to make sure that you get with the firm on your case that's actually gonna handle it from start to finish, so make sure you ask that question ahead of time. Are you willing to travel for my case?
There's nothing wrong with an attorney that only wants to work in one city or one county. Our firm takes a nationwide approach, which gives us more options for where we could pursue a case. Sometimes one county is better than another. Sometimes one state is better than another and it's not always apparent from where the case happened. If you were injured, say in Austin, but the defendant lives in California, it may make more sense to hire a law firm that can file the lawsuit in California because it's gonna be better for your case. Our firm travels all over the country and is willing to take a case anywhere if we think we can help the client. Number eight, does your law firm focus on continuing education? One of our core principles as an organization is we only want the best to work here. That means each of our attorneys, paralegals, and legal assistance completes at least one hour of continued education every single week. Doesn't matter if you've been doing it 30 years or 30 minutes, we want everyone to focus on getting better and approving every day, every week, every month.
Hope that helps. Call us anytime. 24/7/36. We always offer free consultations even if we can't help you. We wanna make sure you get the advice you need.
