Growing fig trees in Canada. Do you ever wonder if there is any possibility to grow a fig tree in the cold climate?
You might be surprised but it is very possible.Traditionally people from our Italian or Greek community have this tree in their garden. How is this possible in such a cold climate, USDA zone 4? We have cold winters where temperatures drop to -35 degrees celsius, whereas meditarian trees can survive in up to low -15 Celsius. It;s pretty simple.
For easy propagation, take cuttings in the fall or spring from a tree about 25 cm length and 1 cm in diameter, from a branch that is about 1-2 years old. For successful rooting, humidity plays a crucial role. During the winter, spring time and with the heat on, normally humidity in the house is low and without proper protection, the cutting might dry out. To prevent this from happening, submerge the fig cutting into a melted paraffin bath leaving 5 cm of the bottom part for rooting or use a glass jar to cover the cutting while creating the greenhouse effect. When taking cuttings make sure that it is of a common fig variety like Brown turkey, Celeste or Chicago.
In the fall, around October November, I will need to find a place to store the fig trees. It needs to be placed with temperatures ranging from -5 - 15 degrees celsius.
