On January 31, 1961, Ham the Chimpanzee was launched into space for a suborbital flight as part of Project Mercury. Part of his mission was to assess if spaceflight would impair cognitive function and reaction time and prevent astronauts from performing time sensitive tasks in space. Upon completing his 16 minute flight (in which he performed without impairment) he was recovered successfully after splashing down in the Atlantic.
