STORYLINE:
US, Japanese and South Korean officials met in Tokyo on Wednesday to discuss non-proliferation and other issues regarding the Korean peninsula.
Glyn Davies, the U.S. special envoy on North Korea, Lim Sung Nam, South Korea's nuclear envoy, and Shinsuke Sugiyama, Director-General of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceania Affairs Bureau participated in the trilateral talks.
Japanese news agency Kyodo said Sugiyama was expected to brief his U.S. and South Korean counterparts on the progress made in intergovernmental talks between Japan and North Korea that began in late August after a four-year hiatus.
Sugiyama stressed the importance of the meeting, saying "it is about time for us to get together at our level after two times of ministerial trilateral meetings. And, this is quite timely."
"I do believe this is the sort of the thing very much we need," he added.
Ahead of the meeting, Davies had said his aim was to achieve "maximum coordination" between the United States, Japan and South Korea on North Korea issues.
US diplomacy on North Korea has made little progress since an agreement to exchange food aid for nuclear concessions collapsed in the spring.
The visit also comes at a time of tension between US allies Japan and South Korea, over an island sovereignty dispute, complicating coordination on defence and foreign policy matters.
Davies is expected to head to Seoul on Wednesday to hold separate talks with the South Korean government.
