On this week’s episode of HYPEBEAST Radio, skate filmmaker and videographer Bill Strobeck opens up about working with Alien Workshop and Supreme. As he approaches 40, the Supreme shooter often works with talent like Na-Kel Smith, Tyshawn Jones and Sean Pablo Murphy—many of whom decades younger than him. Strobeck says working with the budding skaters keeps him young: “These kids are kinda fuckin’ tough. They make me feel younger than them almost, sometimes. ‘Cuz they’ll be like, ‘Nah, I don’t wanna do that,’” at this, Strobeck gestures vaguely toward an imaginary stair-set or handrail. “And I’ll have to be like… c’mon.”

Strobeck says that the skate community has a very unique perspective on age, especially for such an active sport. “Within skateboarding, especially, you just fit in—there’s no age, I don’t think.” For a moment, Strobeck doubles back: “I mean, there is, but I could be out skating with Tyshawn and Alex Olson’s dad could be out skating with us. So I dunno. I feel like a big brother; I try to keep them in check.”

Perhaps no one embodies the sport’s longevity better than Supreme Team OG Mark “The Gonz” Gonzales: “Dude, the Gonz, funny enough, he’s fucking got so much strength and he’s so tough. He’s still doing it, for real.” Reminiscing on the times the two spent filming Cherry and the Paris-centric film, Pussy Gangster, Strobeck gets wistful: ”He’s the dude that whenever he’s gone—he’s the best skateboarder ever. It’s not about skill, which he has. Tons of it. It’s just that his whole deal is that he has so much personality, and he’s unknowing. He’s just real. He’s the real deal.”
