Clicker training is a fun and easy way to connect with your dog or cat. You use a reward, bridge, and cue. The reward can be a small treat or play. The bridge can be any unique sound. The real key is to mark the behavior you are trying to shape with the bridge at the exact moment your pet does the behavior you are trying to shape.
Bridges are often clickers, but it can be any unique sound. Even a noisemaker would work. Saying the word 'yes' works too. Clickers are popular because the sound is very unique and transferable between trainers.
Dogs learn 40% faster with a clicker. But you do not need to use a clicker all the time. In fact, I recommend against it. You only need to use a clicker (or other bridge) when you are needing to explain something to your dog. Since the bridge marks the exact time your dog did the "right" thing and they get a reward every time they get a click, they pick up on this pretty quickly.
You will actually see the gears turning. It is an amazing moment. You can see the world your dog knows expanding as they make this mental leap into the world of possibilities before them (and you).
