In the conclusion of this particular saga, I finally faced up to the fact that I had to remove the rear bumper to access the sensor directly. I ordered a sensor form Amazon and set to removing the rear bumper. Fortunately, I didn't have to remove it completely to access the offending sensor. The sensor I'd ordered from Amazon was the wrong one but I was able to prove it was a faulty sensor by moving it to the No. 1 position because the fault moved to where I'd put the sensor. I ended up ordering a used genuine Volvo sensor from eBay and once it was fitted the rear parking sensors were restored to full working order.
