British long jumper Jacob Fincham-Dakes has spoken of his 'injury' after being denied a silver medal at the European Championship despite already receiving a bosom of honor.
Fincham-Dukes jumped 8.06m on his opening attempt, equalizing the distance of Swede Thobias Montler and France's Jules Pommery with the British athlete taking second place due to the count.
The 25-year-old had the Union Jack around his shoulders and was partying with fans around the stadium but was then told that Fench's team had lodged a protest. They said his foot was marginally above the line and the protest was supported, pushing the Briton into fifth.
He said on Twitter: "Nothing else can be said about last night, for a while I was a European silver medalist but unfortunately due to the appeal I was put into fifth place.
“I think what hurts the most is enjoying the handful of honor, really feeling the moment and then taking that joy away. I would like to thank my coaches and members of the British Athletics staff for their struggle to make the appeal for me, they did everything they could but it just didn't work out for me .
“I know how good a competitor I am and this will motivate me even more next season. There is no doubt that I will be on the podium soon.”
Olympic champion Miltos Tintoglu took the gold medal with a jump of 8.52 metres.
Fincham-Dukes added to the Brits' disappointment in the event as Dina Asher Smith pulled out of a muscle strain in the 100m final.
"He was so upset, so tight," she said. “I wasn't about to go and do a full race on jerky calves and I might rip them both. It's so annoying.” Daryl Neta took the bronze in the race.
