If you have the option to take both the IELTS and the TOEFL, it seems difficult to decide and you may wonder: Which is easier? I studied for both the IELTS and the TOEFL and finally took the TOEFL Home Edition. During my preparation I realized that the two tests differ greatly in some respects and that there is a definite answer to this question! - Where the two tests differ
- In which case you should not take one of the tests
- What you need to do before deciding for one

GUIDE
A short guide to help you with your decision.
For the brave: If you like being challenged and want to learn something new always choose the opposite ;)
1) READING
I found the reading section of the TOEFL harder than that of the IELTS.
MY TIP:
If you struggle with complex texts or if you are a slower reader, choose the IELTS.
If you don't have problems with long and complex texts, you can choose the TOEFL or the IELTS.
2) LISTENING
In the TOEFL you first listen to the audio and then you answer multiple choice questions.
In the IELTS you answer multiple responses style questions and you need to write down words while listening.
MY TIP:
If you have difficulties in understanding English words or spelling, choose the TOEFL.
If you are good in spelling and a quick writer, you can choose the IELTS or the TOEFL.
3) SPEAKING
In the TOEFL you speak into a microphone and not to a real person. This is more like giving a presentation. In the IELTS you talk to a real person.
MY TIP:
If you prefer presenting things, choose the TOEFL.
If you prefer natural conversations, choose the IELTS.
4) WRITING
In the TOEFL there are two writing tasks:
1. You listen to a lecture and you read an article. You then have to write a text where you combine the information.
2. You have to write an essay that is pretty much freestyle.
In the IELTS there are also two writing tasks:
1. You need to describe a chart, map, or something else.
2. You have to write an argumentative essay.
MY TIP:
If you are familiar with describing charts etc. and if you like writing argumentative essays, choose the IELTS.
If you are not used to this, choose the TOEFL because you only have to memorize one structure (for task 1) and the rest is pretty much freestyle.
