The USBRL (Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link) Project is a railway project undertaken by the Indian Railways to connect the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir with the Kashmir Valley. The project involves the construction of a railway line from the town of Udhampur in Jammu to the city of Baramulla in the Kashmir Valley, passing through Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
The USBRL Project is considered to be one of the most challenging railway projects in India due to the difficult terrain and harsh weather conditions in the region. The project involves the construction of several tunnels, bridges, and viaducts over steep slopes, as well as the laying of tracks over unstable soil.
The project was announced in 2002 and construction work began in 2005. The project was initially expected to be completed by 2017, but has faced several delays due to various factors, including land acquisition issues, security concerns, and adverse weather conditions.
As of March 2023, around 90% of the work on the USBRL Project has been completed, and the Indian Railways is aiming to complete the project by 2024. The completion of the project is expected to improve connectivity and transportation between different regions of Jammu and Kashmir, and also contribute to the economic development of the state
