NOVA ZORA emerged from Belgrade's burgeoning rock scene in 1965, initially forming as a beat group called "The Shadows of Night." Founded by guitarist Aleksandar "Saša" Petrović and bassist Milan Nikolić during their university years, the band underwent several lineup changes before settling into their classic formation in 1968.
The addition of conservatory-trained keyboardist Igor Stefanović marked a turning point, steering the band away from simple beat music toward more complex progressive arrangements. Drummer Dragan Živković and vocalist Slobodan "Boban" Marković completed the lineup that would define Nova Zora's signature sound throughout the 1970s.
Their early performances at Belgrade's Dom Omladine and various student clubs caught the attention of Radio Television Belgrade producers, leading to their first recordings in 1970. The band's evolution from beat group to progressive rock outfit coincided with Yugoslavia's growing rock scene, placing them at the forefront of the country's musical evolution.
Throughout the 1970s, Nova Zora toured extensively throughout Yugoslavia and parts of Eastern Europe, sharing stages with other prominent Yugoslav bands. Their live performances were celebrated for their intensity and improvisational elements. The band was particularly known for their ability to blend traditional Balkan musical elements with progressive rock structures.
The 1980s saw several lineup changes, with the departure of original members Nikolić and Živković. They were replaced by younger musicians Goran Jovanović (bass) and Petar "Pera" Dimitrijević (drums), bringing fresh energy to the band's sound. The addition of Ana Simić on vocals and flute in 1985 added new dimensions to their music.
Despite the political turbulence of the 1990s, Nova Zora continued performing and recording, though less frequently. The band became increasingly experimental during this period, incorporating elements of electronic music while maintaining their progressive rock roots. Saša Petrović remained the band's constant creative force throughout these changes.
The 2000s brought renewed interest in Nova Zora's music, particularly from the international progressive rock community. The band, now featuring a mix of veteran and younger musicians, continued performing at progressive rock festivals across Europe. Their later work showed a mature integration of their early progressive style with contemporary musical elements.
In 2009, after health issues forced Saša Petrović to retire from regular performing, the band played a series of farewell concerts, culminating in a legendary final show at Belgrade's Sava Centar. Over their 44-year career, Nova Zora remained one of the most influential and respected bands in Balkan progressive rock, inspiring generations of musicians.
