STORYLINE
Baton-wielding police beat journalists who were protesting against a media clampdown in Nepal''s capital on Saturday, as a general strike called by the opposition to demand the king''s ouster continued to paralyse the Himalayan nation.
About 200 journalists marched through Katmandu demanding restoration of press freedom and the release of dozens of journalists detained since King Gyanendra seized power over a year ago.
Police blocked the rally and charged at the protesters with batons.
Seven journalists were wounded and at least a dozen detained, protest organisers said.
Protests also took place in other neighbourhoods of Katmandu on Saturday.
Thousands of people took to the streets of the Kalanki and Gangabu areas, a day after the political opposition rejected King Gyanendra''s plea for dialogue and vowed to continue their campaign to demand his ouster.
The protesters marched toward the Kirtipur suburb, which has been at the centre of demonstrations over the past few days.
"Democracy, democracy, down with autocracy," chanted the people as they waved the red and white flags of Nepal''s opposition political parties.
Hundreds of police kept close watch but allowed the demonstration to continue.
In the Maitridevi neighbourhood, meanwhile, protesters set fire to tyres as they blockaded roads.
Police tried to disperse the demonstrators and poured water on the burning tyres in an attempt to clear the area.
Meanwhile, in the Assan area, people took to the streets to show support for the ongoing strike.
The seven main opposition parties opposed to the king''s rule decided late on Friday they would continue with a general strike and organise more protests.
Their announcement came hours after King Gyanendra broke his silence after more than a week of protests that left four dead, calling for dialogue with the opposition and for a general election, although he did not specify a date.
