Thousands of Eastern Cape school children are still subjected to using pit toilets. The learners at Thakatha Junior secondary school in Ntsaka near Mthatha still use the pit toilets that have been in place since the 1990s. Most learners just relieve themselves in the field, but it is difficult for girls. The general condition of the school is also deplorable. Meanwhile, the Department of Basic Education is calling for public comment on proposed amendments to some of its policies.
