The king has been a prisoner
A prisoner long in Spain,
And Willie o the Winsbury
‘s long lain wi’ his daughter at hame.

“What ails thee, what ails thee my daughter Janet?
Ye look so pale and wan?
O, have ye had any sore sickness
Or have ye been lyin' wi’ a man?”

“I have not had any sore sickness
Nor yet been lyin' wi' a man;
It is for you, my father dear,
For biding so long in Spain.”

“Cast off, cast off your berry-brown gown,
Stand naked upon the stone,
That I may ken ye by your shape
Whether ye be a maiden or none.”

Her belly was big and her twa sides round,
Her face it was pale and wan.

“O is it to a man o might?
Or is it to a man o fame?
Or is it to any o the rank robbers
That's lately come out o Spain?”

“It is not to a man o might,
Nor is it to a man o fame.
But it is to Willie o Winsbury,
I could bide no longer alone.”

The king’s called on his merry men all,
By thirty and by three:
“Go fetch me William o Winsbury,
For hanged he shall be!”

But when he came the king before,
He was clad all in the red silk.
His hair was like the strands of gold,
And his skin was as white as milk.

“And it is nae wonder,” said the king,
“That my daughter's love ye did win.
Had I been a woman, as I am a man,
My bedfellow ye should hae been.

“O will ye marry my daughter Janet,
By the truth of thy right hand?
And you shall reign when I am dead,
I'll make you the lord of my land.”

“Yes, I will marry your daughter Janet
By the truth of my right hand.
Yes I will marry your daughter Janet,
But I'll not be the lord of your land.”

He's mounted her on a milk-white steed
Himself on a dapple grey.
And made her a lady of as much land
As she'll ride in a long summer's day.
