Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged all parties involved in a military conflict along the Azerbaijan-Armenia border to cease fire immediately and exercise restraint. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a dispute over the mountainous region of Nagorno-Karabakh since 1991. Firefights have been reported recently between the two ex-Soviet republics along their shared border and across Karabakh's front line.
