In weird, scary, sci-fi-becoming-real news, scientists have grown a network of (mostly) human brain cells that are connected via electrodes to a game of pong. This "mini-brain," which has been (affectionately?) nicknamed DishBrain, controls the paddle in the game and responds to stimuli that provide information about the game. Research of this type could provide invaluable information about the human brain and potentially lead to treatments for disorders of the nervous system. On the other hand, THEY'RE GROWING BRAINS IN A FREAKING LAB. What does this mean for the future? What ethical messiness might result from continuing to experiment in this direction?
