It's estimated that up to 50% of the population may have sub-optimal magnesium levels. This is different from gross magnesium deficiency but it's still high enough to cause symptoms. The question is, what causes this?
It's primarily caused by...
1. Stress: Stress is, in my opinion, one of the primary causes of magnesium deficiency because it causes the utilization and depletion of total body magnesium. The more stress you are under the faster your body will go through magnesium and the more you will need to consume to keep up.
2. A poor diet: A poor diet is probably right behind stress as a cause of low magnesium levels. Due to soil depletion and reliance on processed foods, people are eating less and less magnesium.
3. Prescription medications: Prescription medications like blood pressure medications and even acid blockers contribute to magnesium deficiency by reducing absorption and increasing the excretion of magnesium. These medications may be required which means you'll need to supplement for the lost magnesium if you are using them.
